Frozen in time

Dear Santa Claus (Father Christmas, Papa Noel, Saint Nicholas, etc),

tonight I had a dream where I saw clearly what I want you to bring me as a present for Christmas. But this present is not for this year because what I want has not been invented yet. This is my letter to you for Christmas 2026.
Since it has not been invented it doesn’t have a name yet so I will describe it to you and you will know inmediatly what I’m talking about because in my dream I saw these things are pretty common and everyone has several of them. They sell them in packs of 6, and also packs of 12, like the eggs.

OK Santa, this is what I want: It’s an sphere the size of a pearl. It has a camera that records video in 360 degrees with a quality of 512K. It also takes pictures with a resolution of 8 Mega pixels. Sorry I meant 8 Giga pixels.
This thing flies like a drone but you don’t have to drive it. No one does. In fact you never really see it or hear it. It just flies and follows you everywhere.
These things are recording video continuosly and uploading it automatically non stop. They are also looking for the best shots and taking pictures of you from every angle.
These things are flying 24×7, even when you sleep. You don’t have to take care of them so I’m guessing their batteries last years like the ones in the pace makers or they go and charge themselves when needed. In any case there are always a few of this “things” following you. It sounds like a guardian angel. Several of them in fact.

Here is the best part, you don’t have to edit or organize any of the recorded material. “The system” does it all for you. Whenever you want to see something you just ask for “Show me when I went hiking to the Pyrenees last summer”, “When I did wakeboarding in Germany” or “When my daughter Patricia rode a bike for the first time”.

It’s also quite cool that if you don’t remember what you did one day or what you told someone you can just go and check it. “Samantha what did I tell my mom last friday about the dinner?”, and the answer comes to you. I’m calling it Samantha because in my dream everyone calls them by name.

I’m feeling quite silly as I’m writting this in 2016 but I guess all this stuff is pretty normal for you Santa in the future.

In my dream people don’t carry cameras anymore. No more taking pictures, no more posing, no more selfies. And still your whole life is recorded.

This brings me to my memory when I was a teenager and we had a photo camera that belong to the family. You could take only 24 pictures and then you had to go to the shop to develop the film. A week later you went back to the shop and you were able to see in paper the pictures you had taken. I guess that’s why I don’t have many pictures from when I was a kid. Forget about videos.

Pearls

Santa I want you to bring me half a dozen. I guess it’s enough to start with. Meantime I will keep carrying my camera and taking pictures manually.

I’ll see you in the future.
